This scholarship thing all started when one of the church members, Jason Liu, found this youth scholarship at his work. He sent it to Da for Cayleigh to apply.

Cayleigh was interested in getting scholarships for her college. She's only a sophomore and not sure if she'll qualify, so she inquired Jason a little more and proceeded to apply.

What happened next was was more impressive than originally thought.

As Cayleigh was trying to find out how to apply, she also have to start building a resume. She would also need recommendation letters. It took her some time to put together a resume of her accomplishments leading up to high school. While she's doing that, she asked her girl scout leader to write her a recommendation letter. She also asked Sister Margery Anderson as a church young women leader to write the other recommendation letter. Within two to three weeks, her scout leader and Sister Anderson each wrote amazing recommendation letter, and Sister Liz Huffaker helped organized her resume to make it look incredibly professional. These letters are below.

Clayton's adventures continues in March. Since their dorm got pranked, they decided to pay back their dormmates. They used Post It notes and sticked'ed their entire room. See the time lapse video below.

Clayton took a dancing class while at BYU. Afterwards he entered himself into the dance competition. Unfortunately there was no video of his performance. He said he did ok. Brennan was there to cheer him on!
Clayton still goes shopping...even in the snow.

He found a buddy to go rock climbing with him too. He ended up with a blister in his hand, which took days to heal.

It's been a little over two years since I've been called as Branch President. Many things has happened.

I‘ve reorganized the branch presidency, called new counselors. Then I called Sara Huang as new Relief Society President and released Abbey so she can care for the family while I can better serve our branch. In the beginning Sara was timid and was not very confident that she was able to fulfill the calling as RS President. After much prayer and encouragement, she accepted the calling and became a great RS President. Then I called Liz Huffaker as Young Women president. The YW love her. I called Sophy Fugal to be Primary President. She's doing a great job! I did not release Ben Tsai as Elders' Quorum President as there weren't many brothers in the quorum and at the time I did not felt impressed to released him.

Since then I've was also privileged to marry Ricky and FangLan. I also gave a baby's blessing to Julian Wang.

All was working well for about two years. Then in October 2024 Charles Huang informed me that he accepted a new job in Taiwan. Which means he and Sara will be moving to Taiwan to live. That was devastating because I will need to prayerfully look for a new RS president. For the one year that Sara Huang was slowly building up herself to be self confident and take care of our sisters, she is leaving. It was a very very big shoe for the next sister to fill and I have to really think about which sister can do it.

After much prayers and going to the temple, Sister Ella Chong felt just right. When I first asked her, she declined. She says she was not good enough and her English was also hindering her. However, I asked her to pray, fast, and go to the temple about it. She came back and was still very hesitant. I asked her how she felt how I was doing as a Branch President. My Chinese and my Mandarin was bad. I told her I also feel I am not adequate to be the Branch President. She says I am doing good. Then I say, the difference is willingness. I told that she's incredible sister, always the first sister to encourage all the sisters to go to temple session each month, she always puts a lot of spiritual posts for the sisters, and they all know her and love her. I simply helped her recognized that she's already doing some of the things a RS president would do. I told see her that I see her as a great Christ-like leader to lead the sisters in our branch. Though she was not very confident in accepting the calling but say she would try her best. I was ecstatic!- I felt my prayer was once again answered! She says she would have a hard time the English interactions with other members of the stake, and I told her my Chinese is horrible so I asked two counselors that are very good in Chinese. So she chose two awesome super strong counselors: Sister Lifang Tsai and Abbey to compensate for her English.

Why did I write all this? -to get to the point of why I am writing this post. Calling Sister Chong has been a huge humbling experience and blessing for me! I realized that when I called Sara Huang to be RS president, her English was good enough that she would mostly interact with me and in meetings using English. This made me very comfortable using English in our meetings. Well it was a disservice to me as Branch President to 'hide behind my comfort zone of English' and not try to improve Chinese and Mandarin.

However by calling Sister Chong as RS President, I quickly realized I must change myself very fast. Since her English is not proficient, I had to start using google translate. It essentially became my best buddy whenever I needed to make any communications with her and other members. I used it on a daily basis, multiple days a week. When I email agenda items for Branch Council meetings, it would take me 3-4x the amount of time I needed to compose the email with the agenda in Chinese. I would double check and triple check before I send it out.

It doesn't stop there. Any interactions or things I would need the Relief Society to do/participate, I would also send her text messages, in Chinese. I typed a lot of pinyin to compose these text messages, then copy it back from Chinese to English make sure it means the same. In the beginning I had to make many many corrections back and forth before I can send the texts to Sis Chong. Then when she reply with Chinese I would copy the text to google translate to know what she's saying.

It was worth it.

These exchanges of Chinese texts and google translate have been doing some very amazing things to me. I am quickly learning to recognize words in Chinese and slowly I am feeling more confident to respond to Sis Chong's text messages using just pinyin to recognize the characters and using less of google translate. The last three months from November to February since Sis Chong's calling has slowly teaching me to become better reader and writer in Chinese.

I especially felt the Lord's hands in the this blessing when Sister Lynn Xu's dad, 徐永毅, passed away and she asked me to bless his gravesite. When she asked, I was very very nervous but said said YES anyways. So for the one week leading up to his funeral service. I prayed for help, A LOT of help. I started to write the blessing in pinyin, and then used google translate to write in Characters. I asked Abbey to help me proof to make sure the sentences make sense. After reading the blessing in Chinese, I realize (like a lightbulb moment) that over the last three months, my Chinese has improved significantly and I can actually read most of the Chinese characters and annunciate the tones correctly! It's not 100%  but 70-80% is a huge improvement. After many practices of the gravesite prayer in Chinese, I felt much more confident and definitely felt blessed that I was honored to bless Brother Xu YongYi's 徐永毅gravesite.

 "it happened"

With much anticipation where the week prior to Clayton receive his mission call, he was so nervous and excited that he couldn't sleep. (We sort of mislead him that he might get his mission call the previous week). So he waited and we waited. Da and Abbey kept checking from the missionary portal the progress of his mission call assignment.

But before we get to his calling, we will rewind a little. He has come a long way. During his Winter break from BYU, when he was home, he prepared himself to enter the Temple and receive his own endowment. Mom and dad taught him all the lessons to teach and prepare for the Temple and receive his own endowment. On the day of his endowment, Brennan and Cayleigh sacrificed their sleep, waking up very early in the morning to go to the Temple at 8:00am, and endured the 1.5 hours wait in the Temple lobby so we can a family photo after he comes out.

The next part was while Clayton was preparing his paperwork for his mission, he needed to have his wisdom teeth extracted. The story of removing his wisdom teeth is another miracle itself: from insurance, to finding a oral surgeon, to having a friend available to help out, and a brother to watch over him is nothing short of the Lord's work.

After all the paperwork are submitted in late January, the wait begins. We knew the earliest is two weeks, so mom's been asking around. The week we thought Clayton might received his mission call, we jumped the gun during our family Sunday video chat on 2/23/25 and told him that he might receive his mission call on Tuesday. So he took it to heart and built so much excited to him for Tues 2/25/25, he text us in Discord at 3:43AM saying "can't sleep cause the anticipation for my mission call [with crying face]" But he did not receive any notifications on his email nor text message. Mom and dad checked the missionary portal throughout the week; no status update.

Then on Monday 3/3/25 at 4:45pm, "It happened"!!!

He got the text and email alert from the missionary portal,

"Dear Elder, Thank you for your desire to serve. You can view your mission call...."

He was ecstatic! He couldn't wait to open it!

Mom got the first update and mom said, "Whattttttttttt", followed by

Clayton saying "MISSION CALLLLL".

But because on Monday Da had to take Cayleigh for her PVYO, Clayton had to wait until we get home around 9:30 PM EST to open the letter with Brennan next to him and the three of us glued to the computer screen.

Clayton wanted to open the mission call with family first since he can't wait and don't have much time to coordinate to tell everyone since he has lots of homework and exams.

The anticipation was nerve wrecking.

So prior to Clayton reading this mission call. Da created a zoom session for Clayton to share his announce his mission call and also record the session. Da also placed his phone and put it on a tripod to record the three of us facing the laptop screen for Clayton's announcement.

Da asked everyone to guess where he's going: FF guessed England Mandarin speaking, Brennan guessed Canada Mandarin, Mom guessed Hong Kong Cantonese, and Da guesses Sydney Australia Mandarin.

As Clayton opened the email and started speaking, he was very tense with excitement and nervousness, mom was literally 'praying' while the rest of the family are sitting on the edge of our seats highly anticipating... Then it happened....

"...you are hereby called to labor in the Hong Kong Mission Cantonese speaking" !!!

Clayton screamed! mom screamed! and the rest of the family jumped clapping with super excitement!

After all the excitement finally calmed down. We started planning how he would announce it to all his friends at BYU, informed all our family, relatives, many many of our church friends all over the world, and members in our branch. The best timing was on the following Sunday evening.

So Da create a zoom session to send out to everyone, Abbey found a 'mission guessing game' website so everyone can input their guesses. Throughout the week, Da and Abbey has been sending out emails, text messages, Facebook messenger chat, and other ways to inform people of Clayton announcing his mission call. Clayton also sent the links to his friends too. Mom also ordered the Hong Kong flag so it will arrive on time for his Sunday's announcement. FF asked Clayton to hold up the flag!

Since our family already know, we are sworn to secrecy not to tell anyone.

(Click on any of images for larger view)

Above were the final guesses of where people think Clayton might get called to prior to him opening his call on Sunday night. We have 115 entries, a majority of the guesses were for Americas, Australia (where Da served in 1999), and Asian countries. Twenty three final guesses were for Hong Kong.

On Sunday 3/9/2025 Clayton announced it to the world.

There were about 55 zoom participants. Some zoom participants were with their families. Many of Clayton's high school friends joined the zoom call. Clayton also invited 22 people to see him open his mission call in person. So with rough numbers, there were probably more than 100 people that watched Clayton opened his mission call!

The next day mom also posted it on Facebook about Clayton going on a mission and when she was baptized in Hong Kong. Over 176 people expressed their excitement!

Below are the videos recorded from phone, zoom, and desktop screen record to cover all angles of his mission call.

The first two videos are when Clayton announced it just to our family. The last three videos are of Clayton announcing it to everyone. He waited an entire week to announce it to everyone.

(Da is very thankful Clayton's roommates were very nice to listen to him for the placement of the phone to record Clayton.)
